Still there are lots of things where Google can improve

If we look back past 10 years in Search Engines History, there is a lot to say the way Google has changed our lives. For almost every information we rely on Google search results.  I can’t say much about the other industries, but software developers are very much dependent on Google now a days.

Many times, while doing my regular activities on which most of them are related to either software development and finding competitive prices I have noticed that Google search results shows very stale information. For ex. a search on Google.co.in for term “nokia phone ranging 1000” displays information which is too much irrelevant for today. Why would I be interested on price list which was discussed around 5 years ago.

I do agree that doing an advance search in Google by applying date range filters can result latest information, but don’t think a common man ever uses advanced search features. Similar kind of incidents I do see while looking for references for software libraries and documentations. You will find lots of old information which has become stale and should not be given preference than the latest version of documentation.

I don’t see Google as an exception. No software can be said to be 100% bug free and without any scope for improvement. So … is the case with Google search engine.

pastebin.com, viemo, dailymotion and major torrent sites blocked in India

While looking for code of a very typical problem I navigated to pastebin.com url and to my surprise this site was also razed by DOT ( Department Of Telecommunication).  pastebin.com is one of the popular websites among software developers to share source code and examples. Upon Googling I came to know that few more sites Vimeo.com, DailyMotion.com, Xmarks.com and all major torrent sites has been blocked by DOT because of .

These sites were banned after civil lawsuit filed by Copyright Labs to prevent copyright infringement of their upcoming movies. Banning torrent sites and illegal music download sites seems legitimate but, this act on xmarks.com  which is a popular bookmarking website and viemo.com, dailymotion.com, pastebin.com doesn’t seem properly thought through. This way they will end up banning everything and bring you back in 90’s. Who knows what's lined up ahead …. just wait and watch the “Dance of Democracy”.

PDF Merge is an open source freeware utility which can be used to merge one of more PDF files with ease. To use PDF merge you will require to have .Net framework 3.5 installed in your system. Samsung Galaxy Note gets ICS Android 4.0 update in India

Finally Samsung has rolled out ICS OTA updates in India for Galaxy Note users. I was able to update my mobile successfully without any glitches. Total download size was 319.21 MB which took around half an hour on Wifi. As mentioned in the update message, following features were updated in ICS:

• Android 4.0 with touchwiz
• New S Note App ( advanced note taking application, productivity tools)
• New S Memo widgets.

I noticed few changes after doing quick inspection of the updated mobile.

• Improvement in UI Responsiveness
• Better file management facilities in file browser.
• Feature to monitor data usage.
• Power saving option and Bluetooth On/Off feature in notification area.
